According to a May 16 press release, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is expecting a record number of travelers to take to the skies this summer. The TSA is the agency responsible for overseeing security and screening passengers at all US airports.

Per the release, “TSA forecasts Friday, May 24, to be the busiest travel day of the long Memorial Day weekend, anticipating nearly three million passengers. From May 23 to May 29, the agency expects to screen more than 18 million passengers and crew, representing a checkpoint volume increase of approximately 6.4% compared to the same period in 2023.”

What does this mean for you as a traveler? Be ready for busy airports, and yes, delayed flights. The TSA recommends giving yourself plenty of extra time when going to the airport. “Summer travel will be busy, so plan ahead! Give yourself plenty of time to park or return a rental car, take a shuttle to the airport if needed, check in with your airline and drop your bags and prepare for the security checkpoint. Save time by removing items from pockets and placing them in your carry-on bag, instead of putting items directly into bins at the conveyor belt.”

However, we have another suggestion for any air traveler this summer: Buy travel insurance.

Why You Need Travel Insurance for your Summer Trip

A delayed flight can be a hassle, but the airline will compensate you, right? Well, yes. But what if that delayed flight causes you to miss an event on your trip that you’ve already paid for, or requires you to cancel a nonrefundable booking? No airline is going to reimburse you for that. Travel insurance can.

The travel delay benefit in travel insurance plans allows you to be reimbursed for any eligible nonrefundable expenses you incur due to a delayed flight. It can also cover you if you must cancel your trip, or if your bags get lost or delayed

Traveling internationally? Your domestic health insurance is unlikely to cover you if you get sick or injured. The emergency medical coverage offered by travel insurance can ensure you’re able to get quality treatment for an affordable price.

From before takeoff through every aspect of your 2024 summer trip, a travel insurance plan can protect you. Visit our travel insurance quote form today to get instant personalized quotes, compare plans from multiple providers, and purchase online in minutes, no extra paperwork required.

And if you’re from a country other than the US and want medical coverage abroad, we have travel medical insurance plans available as well.
